Set up app permissions for Bump

How to set up location, camera, and notification permissions for Bump on iPhone and Android

Updated this week

Bump needs a few permissions to work properly. If something is not working: your location is off, the scratch map is not updating, face recording is not starting, or you are not getting notifications, checking your permissions is usually the fix.

Before checking permissions, make sure airplane mode is not enabled on your device.

Location permission

Bump requires location set to 'Always Allow' with 'Precise Location' to work best. This is what powers the map, scratch map, and lets your friends see your location.

iPhone

  1. Open your phone's 'Settings'

  2. Scroll down and tap 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Location'

  4. Select 'Always'

  5. Make sure 'Precise Location' is toggled on

Android

  1. Open your phone's 'Settings'

  2. Tap 'Apps' (or 'Apps & notifications')

  3. Find and tap 'Bump'

  4. Tap 'Permissions'

  5. Tap 'Location'

  6. Select 'Allow all the time'

  7. Make sure 'Use precise location' is toggled on

Camera permission

Camera access is needed to record a live face video for your profile photo.

iPhone

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Scroll down and tap 'Bump'

  3. Toggle 'Camera' on

Android

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Tap 'Apps' then 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Permissions'

  4. Tap 'Camera' and select 'Allow'

Photo library permission

Photo library access is needed to pick a photo from your library for your profile.

iPhone

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Scroll down and tap 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Photos'

  4. Select 'Full Access'

Android

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Tap 'Apps' then 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Permissions'

  4. Tap 'Photos and videos' and select 'Allow'

Notification permission

Notifications let you know when friends go somewhere new, when friends send messages, when a support agent replies, and other activity on Bump.

iPhone

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Scroll down and tap 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Notifications'

  4. Toggle 'Allow Notifications' on

Android

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Tap 'Apps' then 'Bump'

  3. Tap 'Notifications'

  4. Toggle 'Show notifications' on

Battery optimization (Android only)

Some Android phones restrict apps running in the background, which can stop your location from updating. If your location or scratch map is not working properly:

  1. Open 'Settings'

  2. Tap 'Battery' (or 'Battery & performance')

  3. Find 'Bump' and set it to 'Unrestricted' or 'No restrictions'

On Samsung devices, also check 'Settings''Device care''Battery''Sleeping apps' and make sure Bump is not on the list.
