Bump is your space for the people and places that matter most 💙
With precise, real-time, and battery-friendly location sharing, Bump makes it simple to discover places, see what friends are up to, and plan meetups without the hassle.
Here’s a quick guide to the app’s key features, and how to make the most of them.
The Map
When you open the app, you'll arrive on the main map that brings together your friends, places, and areas you haven’t explored yet.
From your profile settings, you can choose between two map styles:
Standard
Satellite
📝 The chosen style applies globally across the app, meaning you cannot set different styles for individual friends.
Scratch map
This is your personal scratch map that you carry around in your pocket. It keeps a record of:
where you’ve been while using Bump
areas you haven’t explored yet
the number of nights spent in different locations
how you rank compared to friends for uncovering neighborhoods and cities
Your scratch map automatically uncovers new areas as you move.
🎯 For the most accurate tracking, keep the app open on your device while you’re on the move.
Places
Seamlessly build a map of all the places you go (or want to go!) using places on Bump.
How places work
See suggestions for places to try nearby (for example, coffee shops, restaurants, bars)
Search for and save places to The Map to try later
Get automatic visit detection so you can add places to your map seamlessly
See where friends go and check the public leaderboard to find the regulars
📝 Places you add to your map will be visible on your profile. Friends can see additional details like how many times you've been there.
Bump also automatically detects personal places like your home, work, and school, based on your daily movements.
How personal places work
Your home, work, or school appear as pins on your map and are automatically detected.
If one of your personal places changes, the app will automatically detect and update this after a few days.
When you're at a personal place, friends can see a special badge on your pin.
📝 Your home/work/school pins are permanently visible on the map to you only. Friends can see when you're at this place. Non-friends cannot see this information.
Chat
Make plans to meet up or just keep in touch when you're apart, with chat on Bump. Three ways to start chatting:
Tap the chat icon at the bottom center of your map to access your inbox
Tap a friend on the map, then tap the message button to start a 1:1 chat
Tap on a gathering of friends on the map, then tap the message button to start a group chat
Chat on Bump isn’t your average chat 💬
Forget boring bubbles, here you can:
Drop text, pics, videos, stickers, even doodles anywhere on the canvas 🎨
See when your friends pop in, their profile pic will show up on the side so you know you’re hanging out together in real time 👀
It’s more like a shared playground than a chat box!
Search
On Bump, search allows you to look up any place or any person. You can search for:
friends
contacts
other Bump users
places
Tapping on friends in search results will take you to their current location on the map. Searching for contacts or other Bump users will take you to their profile, where you can add them as a friend. When you search for a place, you'll see at a glance from the search results if you or any of your friends have already been there, plus how far away it is from your current location.
🎯 Just tap a place in the search results to open it on your map. You’ll get all the details - description, opening hours, the public leaderboard, plus a peek at which friends have already been there!
Profile
Your profile on Bump includes:
profile picture

intros count
profiles view count
school/org membership
places and scratch map
best friends
now or recently played music
friend list
From your profile, you can access the app's settings.
📝 Your profile is public on Bump, which means that both friends and non-friends can view it. Non-friends will see a less detailed view of your places and scratch map.
