The scratch map is your personal archive of every place you’ve explored with your phone in your pocket. It helps you visualize your journeys, uncover new areas, and see how much of your world you’ve revealed.
What’s the scratch map?
You can access your scratch map from the bottom left of the main map. It shows a zoomable, color-coded view of:
Explored spots → uncovered hexagons mark everywhere you’ve been
Unexplored areas → still scratched over, waiting to be discovered
Nights → see where you’ve spent the night, and who was there with you
Exploration % → track how much of a neighborhood, city, or country you’ve uncovered (changes as you zoom in or out)
You can also stack yourself up against friends with the leaderboard, which shows who’s uncovered the most in any area.
How it works
Automatic tracking
Your scratch map updates passively while you carry your phone - no need to open the app constantly.
Best results
Keep Bump running in the background when you're out and about for smooth tracking. However, factors like phone settings, battery mode, or signal strength can affect precision so if you want the smoothest, most reliable scratch map updates, keep the app open.
Battery friendly
When Bump is closed or offline, your location is still recorded, just at smart intervals to save battery. This gives you solid tracking without draining your phone.
Privacy and visibility
Your personal places (like home, work, and school) appear only on your map and are not visible to others unless you're currently there.
Friends can view your scratch map in the same level of detail as you.
Non-friends only see a blurred or less detailed version.
Features of the scratch map
Recap
Each time you open your scratch map, you’ll get a mini-summary of any new areas you’ve explored since your last check-in.
Leaderboard
See how you rank among friends, or globally, based on the percentage of an area you’ve scratched off.
Nights
See where you’ve spent the night and who was with you, based on your friend connections.
% Explored
The number changes as you zoom. Compete to uncover neighborhoods, cities, or even whole countries.
🎯 Some areas aren’t supported just yet, but we’re adding new places all the time. Don’t worry, once your area is added, all the spots you’ve already visited will count toward your scratch map automatically 💫
Exploration is fun, but please stay safe - there’s no need to take risks just to scratch off a new spot on your map!
